A minimum of 13 people killed and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.
A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national projects.
