Christantus Uche Ignites Dominant Crystal Palace Victory at Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their first-ever continental adventure, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Without star players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a commanding result that virtually guarantees them a spot in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another three points in their upcoming fixture against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to seal straight entry to the last 16, particularly following a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Opportunity
This occasion provided a chance for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a well-taken goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second consecutive match.
A Shelbourne side that had finished their domestic season were no match even for a largely rotated Palace lineup. The Londoners were already weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee injuries.
Control Established from the Start
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A flowing move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close soon after, driving a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the referee dismissed the protests.
The formerArsenal man didn't need to wait long to find his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's effort had struck the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for two agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The contest was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw several players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring with his very first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also missed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for development in his game.
A solitary concern for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect night for the traveling side.
