The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
