Users Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
